Beyond28 Illustrations

_

As part of the Beyond28 campaign, an initiative to celebrate and honor the Black community outside of the twenty-eight days of Black History Month, the Warriors creative team set out to pay tribute to twenty-eight Black leaders, politicians, trailblazers, athletes, and entertainers.

Illustrations were shown on the in-arena video boards a during games throughout February 2021 and included trailblazers such as Malcom X, Angela Davis, and Josephine Baker. I'm grateful to have been able to contribute illustrations of Mahershala Ali and Danny Glover to this project, in addition to co-designing the Beyond28 campaign.

We drew inspiration from activist art of the Civil Rights Movement - art that is clearly still relevant today. We studied work from the Black Panther Party, including imagery from newsletters that were created to inform, educate, and organize the people - similar to the goal we had for this project. We were drawn in particular to the style of graphic artist, Emory Douglas. Thick black outlines, two-color graphics, and strong texture combinations were a few of the techniques we emulated in our illustrations. Additionally, we integrated a background element that is a visual staple of the Civil Rights Movement and Black Lives Matter protests - cardboard signs with bold text.
